Flytographer Review: How To Get The Best Vacation Photos

Every time we go on a family trip, my family gets annoyed with me. Yes, we all know family vacations are supposed to special times to create everlasting memories that we will treasure forever, but let’s be honest here- they can be F*CKING stressful, amiright?

One of the things that triggers my family vacation stress is the constant fear of forgetting these moments because we don’t capture them on camera. Sure, we all take a ton of quick selfies to post on Instagram, or random scenery shots that we will probably never look at again- but truly special photos of- GASP!- all four of us? We have gotten home from many a trip to realize we didn’t have even one good family picture where we are all looking at the camera, with a background that feels true to our destination. I mean, I can barely remember what I had for breakfast these days- can’t imagine if in 20 years I’ll remember if the brick wall behind us in that photo was located in France or Florida!

So every trip, I nag my crew 10 times a day at minimum about getting a good family photo, and by 9am they are ready to ditch me on a random sidewalk and run for their lives. Then, on a trip to Puerto Rico in 2019 my friend Sarah introduced me to Flytographer, and every single family vacation has been better since.

How To Book A Flytographer:

The process is so easy- you enter your destination and preferred date and time, and Flytographer suggests local photographers who may be available and then reaches out to them to secure options. You get to see examples of their work, and select accordingly. They also provide route suggestions to get the best shots, though for our family I always book the shoot on location at our hotel because it feels less stressful to be on our “turf” in case we run late or want to change clothes halfway through.

You can choose how long you want to book the photographer as well- and since our family isn’t so keen on long shoots, I usually choose a 30 minute photoshoot when it’s an option, or an hour. Longer than that and my kids will tear my hair out, plus, we have always gotten more than enough great shots in 30 short minutes, I can’t imagine needing any more time than that.

On a recent girls’ trip with my college friends to Austin, TX I decided to gift the group with a 30 minute shoot and it was SO. MUCH. FUN. We did a similar trip in 2019 to Mexico and upon returning home, realized we didn’t have one great photo of the four of us, and I vowed that would not be the case this time around. We captured so many amazing shots that not only highlighted the dynamics of our friendships, but also highlighted the beauty and personality of Austin, such a special place!
