Book Recommendations: My Favorite Recent Reads
With Spring Break coming up for many, wanted to share a quick list of 10 books I read recently and absolutely LOVED (as well as one- at the end of the reading list- that I just picked up to read on our family trip next week, if I can wait that long!). I need to add some more into the mix (I am a VERY fast reader, always have been) so please share any recommendations in the comments so I can order accordingly :)
(NOTE: I get most of my books from Book of the Month, if you join via THIS LINK you get your first book for $5 and I get a credit for a free book which is pretty cool for me too! I have been a BOTM member for like 3 years now and I love it so much- curates book selections for me and the variety is amazing, plus it is like $10 a month, so 1/2 the price of the hardcovers at retail typically…)
Book Recommendations: My Favorite Recent Reads
The Reckless Oath We Made:
Heartwarming story with characters that stick with you- a very sweet read. I read it 3 or 4 months ago and still think about it all the time- it is hard to explain the storyline (when I try, it sounds crazy) but just trust me!
This Tender Land:
When this arrived I was like- wait, why did I pick this? The cover description didn’t sound very “me”- but omigod I LOVED this book so much. It really turned out to be a great book- the narrator’s voice, the fascinating little details, touching and beautiful.
Get a Life, Chloe Brown:
I am not really one for rom-com books, but this was a super fun, quick read and interesting look at how easy it is to perceive people one way based on what you see, but being able to read what goes on inside their heads shows you a whole different story.
Wild Game:
This is a memoir that reads like a gripping novel- it starts when the narrator’s mother confesses her extramarital affair (at this point, the author is just 14 years old!) and makes her a co-conspirator in pulling off the charade. I am halfway through it and can’t wait to devour the rest.
You Should Talk To Someone:
Ordered this when I saw it in TIME Magazine’s best books of the year, and have made everyone I know read it. It resonates with me for many reasons- especially as someone who never thought therapy was a “thing” until I tried it myself, and it changes my life week after week. There are elements of self help and how to, but overall, the experience of reading this book is a supremely enjoyable way to forever transform your life and the way you think about mental health.
Three Women:
If you didn’t know the stories told in this book were true tales of real women, you would just think you are reading a page-turning-stay-up-until-4am-to-finish-it novel that happens to have some of the most well-written sentences ever that capture so many sentiments. Obsessed.
Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine:
Laugh out loud funny on one page, and tear jerking on the next, this is a beautiful example of how connected you can feel to a character you never met (and, yes, doesn’t ACTUALLY exist- it’s fiction) and the impact their story can have on the way you appreciate your own story.
El Deafo:
Yup, it’s a kids book- and a graphic novel at that- but so poignant and special, it’s a must. MUST. MUST. I will say it again- MUST. More on it HERE- because it happens to be one of Alexa’s faves too.
Open Book:
Jessica Simpson’s memoir- I feel like I grew up with her in real life, and seeing where she is now and where she ACTUALLY was back then is so intriguing and relatable.
