As Seen on TV: Live with Regis & Kelly Little Black Dress Segment

[media id=4 width=480 height=380]

Hopefully you caught my segment on Live with Regis & Kelly this morning all about finding the perfect little black dress for your body type.  It was such a fun one to put together because it gave me an excuse to spend an entire weekend shopping for LBD's and then I got to test my fashion expertise as I met with each model to see if my LBD guess met their personal LBD standards. And guess what? I scored 100%- I am kinda proud of myself.

Oh- and in the process I picked up an amazing LBD for myself from Rosie Pope Maternity- after all, I couldn't do a whole segment on the PERFECT dress and show up wearing something mediocre, right?

For details on the dresses featured in the segment and tips on what styles to look for- read on...

Age-Appropriate Style: Sleeves always add a sophisticated touch, something with a wide v-neck that shows of the collar bones without dipping too low is ideal.

  • American Living Mock Wrap Cascade Black Dress- $74.99 at www.jcp.com

Minimize Bust: One shoulder styles are most flattering, look for fabric that is ruched and/or textured to avoid the material clinging and creating a shelf under the bust.

Create height on a petite frame: A vertical detail on top gives the illusion of height, and a dress that isn’t cut exactly at the waist is best- it doesn’t cut the torso in half and creates interesting proportions that have a lengthening effect.

  • Mango for JC Penney Strapless Dress- $79.14 at www.jcp.com

Create curves on a boyish figure: Look for a style that is nipped in at the waist and has structured (borderline puffy) shoulders. Then, emphasize the waist with a metallic belt on the tightest setting that you can manage comfortably.

Tuck in a tummy: Look for a fitted sheath style dress that has an extra slimming panel built in- there are tons of options like that out on the market right now and

Pear Shaped: Show off the shoulders- and find an empire waist cut in a fabric that won’t cling to the curves that you would rather leave under wraps. Silk georgette is a great option because it is very flowy.

Maternity Style: Thick knits are key to keeping the silhouette smooth, look for a style with volume around the neck and a length that hits just above the knee to balance the bump.
