Yeah, yeah, yeah- the best black dress story has been done to death, I agree. But even so, when you find the best black dress, and figure out how to style that black dress for a bunch of different occasions, it takes the “what am I going to wear to that work dinner/cocktail party/important meeting/High Holiday service” panic out of the equation. You always have a fall-back option. Especially when traveling! To me, the sign of a perfect basic black dress is when you can wear it solo and it hugs your curves in the most flattering- but appropriate- way, then, you can layer choice pieces on top to make it on one hand, playful- and on the other- polished.

What I love about the midi length that most of these dresses have in common is the versatility. I put a lightweight turtleneck over the basic black dress to give it the look of a super sleek pencil skirt (again, this makes it so perfect for travel- the ability to have a fashion “fake out” moment), and then with a blazer on top (how gorgeous is this IRO style?!) you can open it up to show the neckline, but also keep it buttoned up to be, well, buttoned up!
And of course, the other choice you have with a simple staple like the basic black dress is to keep it neutral (like I did in the look with the blazer) or go all-in on the color wheel (like my turtleneck, bright bootie and the amazing bright bag that I wear all the time- check out the latest version HERE, and guess what?
